EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — In an impressive debut, Pat Fitzgerald secured his first win as head coach of the Michigan State Spartans, leading the team to a 30-20 victory over the Toledo Rockets on Friday night. The game marked a significant moment for Fitzgerald, who previously coached Northwestern before taking the helm at Michigan State.

The Spartans showcased their offensive capabilities, with Alessio Milivojevic delivering a crucial 5-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Bullard early in the fourth quarter, which helped Michigan State reclaim the lead. The victory was solidified by an 11-play drive that culminated in a 51-yard field goal from Liam Boyd, extending the Spartans' lead and securing the win.

This victory was Fitzgerald's first since he led Northwestern to a win against Nebraska on August 27, 2022, and it sets a positive tone for the Spartans' season. The team demonstrated a strong start, scoring on all five of their possessions in the first half, although they were limited to four field goals, leading 19-7 at halftime.

Toledo, under the guidance of new head coach Mike Jacobs, who took over after Jason Candle's departure to Connecticut, put up a strong fight. The Rockets were competitive throughout the game, with John Alan Richter throwing two touchdown passes, including one to Adjatay Dabbs in the third quarter. Richter completed 12 of 21 passes for 196 yards, along with an interception. Additionally, Connor Walendzak's impressive 71-yard run in the fourth quarter briefly gave Toledo a 20-19 lead.

Milivojevic had a productive outing for Michigan State, completing 26 of 34 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown. Cam Edwards, a transfer from Connecticut, also made a significant impact, rushing for 98 yards and scoring a touchdown on the Spartans' opening drive, demonstrating the team's offensive depth.

Defensively, Toledo's Armorion Smith made headlines with his performance, returning to East Lansing where his story of raising his siblings gained attention. He recorded seven tackles in the game, contributing to the Rockets' defensive efforts.

Looking ahead, both teams will be preparing for their next matchups. Toledo will host Central Connecticut State on September 12, while Michigan State will face Eastern Michigan on the same day. This victory not only marks a successful start for Fitzgerald but also sets a promising outlook for the Spartans as they aim to build momentum in the upcoming games.
