After acquiring Corey Kiner from the Arizona Cardinals on the eve of the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline, the New England Patriots thinned the backfield.
The organization announced the release of Hassan Haskins and have since cut JaMycal Hasty, per a Saturday report from Patriots on SI’s Ethan Hurwitz.
Both running backs had signed ahead of the preseason opener after visiting Gillette Stadium for workouts.
Haskins, 26, entered the NFL with head coach Mike Vrabel’s former Tennessee Titans in the fourth round of the 2022 draft at pick No. 131 overall. The past first-team All-Big Ten selection out of Michigan was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024 and stands with 76 carries for 229 yards, 18 catches for 119 yards, three touchdowns and one start in his career. Through 371 snaps on offense and 683 snaps on special teams, the 6-foot-2, 228-pound back has handled 30 tackles and 28 kickoff returns.
Hasty, 29, broke into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2020. The 5-foot-8, 205-pound Baylor product was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers and rose from the practice squad to the active roster while in the NFC West. Stops with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins have been logged since then. As have tours in Foxborough through three coaching staffs, beginning as a waiver claim. Across 56 games, Hasty’s career includes 854 yards and six touchdowns across 181 touches from scrimmage. He has also returned 26 kickoffs.
As starters Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson looked on, the pair of vested veterans led the team rushing during the preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns. But the depth chart has added a No. 3 option in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round draft pick.
The NFL’s cutdown deadline is set for Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.
