The New England Patriots kept their starters wrapped in bubble wrap throughout the preseason, but Kyle Williams did not need the first-team offense around him to make a major impression.
Williams capped his impressive August by scoring a touchdown in New England’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night. The explosive receiver hauled in a pass from Tommy DeVito and raced 45 yards to the end zone for the Patriots’ first score of the game.
The play continued a remarkable streak for Williams, who scored a touchdown in each of New England’s three preseason games.
That is one way to make sure nobody forgets about you. Williams finished the first half against Cleveland with two receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. His 45-yard score offered another reminder of the speed and big-play ability he can bring to New England’s offense when the games begin to count.
Kyle Williams Made Most Of Limited Patriots OpportunitiesPatriots head coach Mike Vrabel took a cautious approach throughout the exhibition schedule. New England did not play its starters in any of its three preseason games, leaving Williams to work with reserve quarterbacks and a constantly changing supporting cast. That could have made it difficult for the young receiver to generate much momentum.

He reached the end zone in the preseason opener, did it again against the Philadelphia Eagles and completed the three-game sweep in Cleveland. Scoring in every preseason game does not guarantee regular-season success, but it certainly demonstrates Williams’ ability to capitalize on limited opportunities. His explosiveness was the most encouraging part.
Williams does not need to pile up receptions to change a game. He has the speed to turn one opening into a touchdown, as he showed by breaking loose against the Browns. That trait could make him especially valuable to an offense looking for more chunk plays.
The Patriots did not reveal much about their regular-season plans during the preseason. Their starting quarterback, offensive line and top skill players remained on the sideline, making it nearly impossible to evaluate what the full offense will look like. Williams still managed to provide a compelling preview.

There will be tougher tests against starting NFL defenses, and preseason production always should be viewed with some caution. Williams nevertheless did everything the Patriots could have asked of him.
Three games. Three touchdowns. One unmistakable message. The Patriots have an explosive weapon who deserves to be part of their regular-season plans.
