This makes the development of their remaining top prospects, like Aidan Miller, even more crucial. Unfortunately for the Phillies, Miller has faced challenges this season, having yet to take the field due to a persistent back issue. However, recent updates suggest that his return could be on the horizon.
Scott Lauber from the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the 22-year-old shortstop is showing promising signs of recovery. On the Inquirer’s baseball podcast, Phillies Extra, Luke Murton, the minor league director, indicated that Miller is progressing very well. The Phillies have been somewhat reserved in providing updates on Miller's condition, especially following a spinal procedure he underwent on June 5 to alleviate recurring low-back pain.
Despite the Phillies bolstering their infield with the addition of second baseman Luis Arraez, it remains important for Miller to gain some playing time before the season concludes. Murton hinted that Miller could soon be back in action, stating, “I don’t want to overpromise and underdeliver, but there may be a surprise in the near future.” This suggests that fans might see Miller return to the diamond sooner rather than later.
The minor league season is winding down, with various levels concluding in the coming weeks. The Low-A and High-A leagues will finish their seasons on Sunday, September 10, while Double-A wraps up on September 13 and Triple-A on September 20. Notably, the Phillies’ Low-A team has qualified for the playoffs, presenting a potential opportunity for Miller to embark on a rehabilitation assignment and regain his rhythm.
Additionally, Miller could also participate in the Arizona Fall League, which is set to begin on October 3. He was initially slated to play in the AFL last year but had to withdraw due to his back issues. His return to competitive play would be a significant step in his development.
Miller was selected by the Phillies in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft after a successful high school career. He has consistently ranked among the top 100 prospects, peaking at No. 23 according to MLB Pipeline before his injury sidelined him, causing his ranking to drop to No. 61. In 2025, he showcased his potential by posting a .264 batting average with a .392 on-base percentage and .433 slugging percentage, alongside 14 home runs and an impressive 59 stolen bases across Double-A and Triple-A.
While his primary position is shortstop, Miller is projected to transition to third base, particularly as he is currently blocked by established star Trea Turner. With Alec Bohm set to enter free agency after this season, this shift could become a reality sooner rather than later.
Although it may take until 2027 or 2028 for Miller to make his major league debut, depending on the duration of any potential lockout, the future looks bright for this promising young player.
