NORTH WALPOLE — On Saturday, September 5, the Portsmouth High School bass fishing team participated in the junior varsity state championship tournament held on the Connecticut River. This event marked a significant opportunity for the team, as they sent two teams of freshmen to compete against various schools in the region.
Cameron Welch and Cavin Shaw represented Portsmouth well, finishing in 11th place overall. Their performance included a notable catch, with their biggest fish weighing in at 1.79 pounds. Meanwhile, teammates Luke Benton and Charlie Lavery also had a commendable outing, securing 13th place with their largest fish weighing 1.33 pounds. These results highlight the growing talent within the Portsmouth bass fishing program, particularly among its younger athletes.
The junior varsity state championship is a crucial event in the high school fishing calendar, providing students with a platform to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level. Following this tournament, the Portsmouth bass fishing team is set to return to action on Saturday, September 12, when they will compete in the Coe-Brown Invitational on Northwood Lake. In addition to the bass fishing results, the weekend also featured action in boys soccer. In a Class C South matchup, Traip Academy secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Wells. The Rangers displayed a well-rounded offensive effort, with Adrian Cunningham, Curran Cleary, Sam Abbott, and Tierney Ford each contributing to the scoreline. Notably, Cunningham also provided an assist, showcasing his playmaking abilities.
Traip Academy's goalkeeper, Sean Webster, played a crucial role in the win, making five saves to keep Wells at bay. For Wells, Dejuan Bent managed to find the back of the net, while goalkeeper Aiden Barker had a busy day, recording an impressive 10 saves in the loss.
