Projecting the 2026-27 Minnesota Timberwolves starting lineup with Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga has had a unique NBA career to this point and there’s hope that a change of scenery will finally allow him to play up to his potential.

Kuminga, a free agent wing, and the Minnesota Timberwolves agreed to a two-year, $12.4 million deal on Wednesday.

It’s hard to believe but Kuminga has now played five NBA seasons after the Golden State Warriors surprised everyone by using the No. 7 pick to gamble on his services. To say thing went smoothly for Kuminga in the Bay Area would not be true as he tenure was marked by a rocky relationship in which neither side seemed to fully figure it out.

But when healthy the 23-year-old provides a dynamic option and defensive versatility. Minnesota figures to be a solid landing spot for him because he will be surrounded with a lot of talent on the roster and won’t be asked to carry too much of the load.

Interestingly enough, Kuminga played some of the best basketball of his career for the Warriors against the Timberwolves in 2025 when he averaged 20.8 points on 54.3 percent shooting over a five-game stretch.

Power forward: Jonathan Kuminga

Center: Rudy Gobert

There’s a lot of potential there. Especially for a team that’s been successful but unable to get past the top of the Western Conference over the last few years. The Timberwolves bowed out in the conference semifinals last season after two consecutive exits in the Western Conference Finals. Any path to the Finals is only getting more difficult as the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder seem set up for potential dynastic runs currently.
