Raul Fernandez, the talented Spanish rider from Aprilia-Trackhouse, celebrated a remarkable victory at the British MotoGP Grand Prix held on Sunday at the iconic Silverstone circuit. This win marks only the second triumph of his career, showcasing his potential in the competitive world of motorcycle racing.
Starting from pole position, championship leader Jorge Martin struggled to maintain his lead as Fernandez quickly overtook him, finishing the race in second place. Italian Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium, securing third position. After the race, Fernandez expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I think it was a perfect race." He added, "I’m happy and this win is special because we got three consecutive podiums and this one was a victory. Now we want more." This victory not only boosts his confidence but also reflects the progress he has made throughout the season.
Fernandez's journey to victory was not without its challenges. After crashing during the sprint race on Saturday, he admitted to feeling foolish about his earlier performance. However, he turned things around on Sunday, leading all 20 laps of the race. Martin, who had a disappointing start possibly due to mechanical issues, fell behind early on and could not recover. His performance, however, still allowed him to extend his lead in the championship standings to 31 points.
Martin commented on his race, noting, "This result gave us a big, big boost for our motivation. Today I wanted that victory so badly. I was really focused, but I did a small mistake in the first corner and I lost a lot of places." Meanwhile, Japan's Ai Ogura, who started second on the grid and was second overall in the standings, faced a setback when he slid off midway through the race, now trailing Martin by 37 points.
Bezzecchi emerged as a formidable contender for the championship after a challenging recovery from a collarbone fracture sustained during the qualifying round of the Germany MotoGP last month. Reflecting on his performance, he stated, "It’s been a tough weekend, a tough period in general. We worked hard through the whole summer break. Obviously, I didn’t expect such a great comeback... I couldn’t have given anything more because I am destroyed now. It was good..."
The British MotoGP Grand Prix concluded in under 40 minutes, with riders reaching impressive speeds of up to 330 km/h on the straights. The race was not without its incidents, as several riders, including Ogura and former world champion Francesco Bagnaia, faced difficulties and crashes. Spain's Alex Marquez of Ducati-Gresini finished in fourth place, followed closely by KTM's Pedro Acosta and Italy's Fabio Di Giannantonio from the Ducati satellite team VR46. Reigning world champion Marc Marquez, riding for Ducati, finished in seventh place, a disappointing outcome for the seasoned racer.
