BALTIMORE — The Boston Red Sox will be without center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela for the second consecutive game on Friday as he continues to recover from a tight right quadriceps muscle. This injury has raised concerns for the team, especially as they look to maintain their competitive edge in the American League East.
Rafaela, who has been a key player for the Red Sox this season, expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, "It’s not something I’m going to be out (with) for a while." His absence comes after he played through discomfort, which became apparent during a recent game against the Seattle Mariners, where he was removed in the seventh inning of a lopsided loss.
In Rafaela's absence, Eli White will once again take on the responsibilities of center field, a role he filled during Thursday’s game, where the Red Sox secured a narrow 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. White's performance will be crucial as the Red Sox aim to build momentum in their series against the Orioles.
Manager Tracy provided an update on Rafaela's condition, noting improvements but emphasizing caution. "He’s better today, so it’s improved," Tracy said. However, he added that Rafaela would not play until he is fully fit, indicating that the team is taking a careful approach with his recovery. While there is a possibility he could return on Saturday, Tracy mentioned, "I would say it’s unlikely, for sure," hinting at the team's preference to avoid placing him on the injured list.
The 25-year-old Rafaela has had an impressive season, boasting a batting average of .282, complemented by a .317 on-base percentage and a .443 slugging percentage. He has tallied 16 home runs and 70 RBIs across 135 games, and his defensive skills earned him a Gold Glove award, making his absence felt both at the plate and in the field.
As the Red Sox prepare to face Orioles right-hander Shane Baz, who holds a 5-14 record with a 4.01 ERA in 27 starts, they will be relying on their lineup's depth. Left-hander Ranger Suarez will take the mound for Boston, aiming to improve upon his second-half struggles, which have seen his ERA rise to 5.01 in seven starts.
With the Red Sox looking to solidify their position in the playoff race, every game counts, and Rafaela's return will be eagerly anticipated by fans and teammates alike. As the team navigates these injury challenges, they will need to maximize their performance against the Orioles to keep their postseason hopes alive.
