Report: Eagles waive rookie DT Zion Wilson during roster cuts

The Philadelphia Eagles are waiving rookie defensive tackle Zion Wilson as they continue trimming their roster, according to Andrew DiCecco.

Wilson joined Philadelphia in June as an undrafted free agent after the NCAA denied his request to play a sixth college season at East Carolina. The 6-foot-3, 316-pound defender entered the NFL with limited experience on that side of the football after beginning his college career as an offensive lineman. His move to defensive tackle eventually produced encouraging results. Wilson recorded 42 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and seven sacks during his final season with the Pirates, giving the Eagles an intriguing developmental prospect for training camp.

Wilson flashed some of that potential during the preseason. He finished Philadelphia’s finale against the Cincinnati Bengals with four tackles, one tackle for loss and one quarterback hit.

His departure reflects the depth of Philadelphia’s defensive front. Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo, Byron Young and Ty Robinson entered roster decisions with stronger claims to spots, while Gabe Hall and rookie Uar Bernard were among the other players competing for opportunities.

Because Wilson is subject to the waiver process, every NFL team will have an opportunity to claim him. If he clears, he could remain a candidate for Philadelphia’s practice squad. His athletic traits, production at East Carolina, and relative lack of experience at defensive tackle suggest there may still be room for considerable development.
