Ricardo Pepi, the U.S. Men’s National Team forward, is gearing up for his fourth season with PSV Eindhoven, where he has set his sights on winning a fourth consecutive Eredivisie title. The 23-year-old Texan has made a significant impact in the Netherlands since his arrival, and this season, he aims to lead his team to further glory.
Pepi's journey in Dutch football began nearly four years ago when he joined FC Groningen on loan from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg. His impressive performances eventually led to a permanent move to PSV, where he has become one of the standout strikers in the league. Over the years, Pepi has had to navigate competition for his starting position, notably overcoming the challenge posed by club legend Luuk de Jong.
Despite facing injury setbacks in previous seasons, Pepi has demonstrated his scoring prowess, netting 47 goals in 106 appearances for PSV. His contributions have been vital in helping the club secure three consecutive Eredivisie titles, solidifying his reputation as a key player. This season, Pepi has already made his mark by scoring twice in his first four league matches.
Having been a part of the USMNT squad during the recent FIFA World Cup, Pepi's performance on the international stage has further elevated his profile. He played in all five matches during the tournament, starting in two, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. However, despite frequent speculation linking him with moves to Premier League clubs, including a close call with Fulham earlier this year, Pepi has decided to remain with PSV, a choice he believes will benefit both him and the team.
In a recent interview with ESPN NL, Pepi expressed his commitment to PSV, stating, "In my mind I had already made up that I wanted to stay here at PSV. That gave me a lot of peace of mind. And it prepared me for the season coming up." His determination to pursue another title reflects his dedication to the club and its ambitions.
While Pepi has chosen to stay, PSV has seen some key departures, including Ismael Saibari and Joey Veerman. However, Pepi remains optimistic about the team's prospects, stating, "We had some players, some very important players, that left us. But that’s the game. That’s football at the end of the day. We also were able to sign some big players as well. So I feel like our squad is coming together, and I feel very, very happy with the squad that we have and very confident, for sure."
PSV began their season with a challenging 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard but has since bounced back with three consecutive victories, including impressive wins of 5-1 against Groningen and 6-1 against FC Utrecht. Pepi’s contributions have been crucial in these matches, and he is eager to continue his scoring form.
The upcoming fixtures present a significant challenge for PSV, starting with a crucial match against Ajax in Amsterdam. Pepi acknowledged the strength of their opponents, who have made notable signings this summer, but he remains confident in PSV's capabilities. "We obviously know that they’re a good team. They’ve made some really important transfers for them as well. But I feel like at the end of the day, we are really confident in our team and our group, the way we work on the pitch, our coaching staff. So we’re really just trying to get the win and make a statement for sure," he said.
As the season progresses, Pepi's performance will be pivotal in PSV's quest to maintain their dominance in the Eredivisie and make a mark in European competitions, including their upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign against Shakhtar Donetsk.
