Rick Rosinski has quickly found a new position after his unexpected exit from Green Bay Preble, being named the head coach for the Shawano boys basketball team. His hiring comes just three months after he resigned from Preble, where he had a brief but impactful tenure.
Rosinski's coaching career spans several decades, including a notable 20-year stint at Green Bay East before moving to Preble for the last three seasons. His departure from Preble was somewhat controversial, as he resigned on May 7, only to rescind his resignation four days later. However, the administration chose not to reinstate him, leading to his eventual exit from the program.
During his time at Preble, Rosinski garnered significant support from players and parents, who felt he was unfairly treated. Many voiced their concerns at school board meetings, and a petition with over 100 signatures was submitted in his favor. Despite this backing, the school opted to move forward with a different coach, naming former University of Wisconsin-Green Bay player Steven Baker as his successor.
Rosinski's journey to Shawano began unexpectedly while he was on a beach in Texas. A call from Jim Hayes, his long-time assistant, alerted him to the opening at Shawano. Initially hesitant about returning to coaching, Rosinski decided to explore the opportunity further. After a swift application and interview process, he was convinced of the fit, particularly after a productive discussion with Shawano's athletic director, Kayla Brendemuehl.
Rosinski was impressed by Brendemuehl's preparedness and knowledge, stating, "She was on the ball... that’s kind of what sold the deal." This reassurance played a crucial role in his decision to accept the position. Additionally, former player and coach Tony Bennett reached out to Rosinski, encouraging him to take the job, which further solidified his resolve.
As he steps into his new role, Rosinski faces the challenge of revitalizing a Shawano team that finished last season with a 9-16 record, placing seventh in the nine-team Bay Conference. With the first practice scheduled for November 17, he has limited time to prepare the squad for the upcoming season.
Shawano will benefit from returning talent, including their top three scorers from last season. Key players include 6-foot-7 forward Jackson Nordin, who averaged 17 points and 7 rebounds, and 5-11 guard Will Verkuilen, who contributed 15.4 points, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. Both players received honorable mention all-conference accolades, providing a solid foundation for Rosinski to build upon.
Joining Rosinski on the bench will be Hayes, whose presence has been a significant factor in Rosinski's coaching journey. Their long-standing partnership has been instrumental in both their coaching successes, and Rosinski credits Hayes with much of the behind-the-scenes work that is vital for a successful program.
As Rosinski embarks on this new chapter with Shawano, he aims to not only improve the team's performance but also create a positive and supportive environment for his players. With a blend of experience and renewed enthusiasm, he hopes to lead Shawano to greater heights in the competitive landscape of high school basketball.
