The Rochester Red Wings faced a challenging matchup against the Syracuse Mets on Tuesday night, ultimately falling short with a 7-4 defeat at NBT Bank Stadium. Despite the loss, Rochester's strong performance in the second half of the season keeps them at the top of the International League standings, holding a narrow one-game lead over the Indianapolis Indians with less than three weeks left in the regular season.
The game started off favorably for Syracuse, who quickly established dominance. Ronny Mauricio kicked things off with a two-out solo home run in the first inning, giving the Mets an early 1-0 lead. The Mets continued their offensive surge in the second inning, scoring four additional runs. Eric Wagaman and Billy Amick both hit back-to-back solo home runs, followed by a two-run double from Zack Short that brought in Nick Lorusso and Hayden Senger, pushing the Mets ahead 5-0.
As the game progressed, Syracuse extended their lead to 6-0 in the third inning. MJ Melendez doubled, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amick, further solidifying the Mets' commanding position. However, the Red Wings were not ready to concede defeat.
Rochester began their comeback in the fourth inning when Cayden Wallace hit a solo homer to left field, marking his ninth home run of the season. Just two batters later, Liover Peguero followed suit with another solo shot to left-center, narrowing the gap to 6-2. The Red Wings continued to chip away at the lead in the seventh inning when Maxwell Romero Jr. drew a walk, and Phillip Glasser hit a two-run home run to right field, bringing the score to 6-4.
Glasser had an impressive night at the plate, finishing with two hits, two RBIs, and a run scored. His efforts, however, were not enough to secure a victory for Rochester. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Syracuse responded with an insurance run. Nick Lorusso singled, stole second base, and then scored on an RBI single from Hayden Senger, extending the Mets' lead to 7-4.
Syracuse's pitching was effective, with reliever Ben Simon recording four outs before closer Brian Metoyer secured the final three outs in a scoreless ninth inning, marking his first save of the season. Jonathan Santucci earned the win for the Mets, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings while striking out six batters. DJ Herz took the loss for the Red Wings, giving up six runs on seven hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work.
In terms of statistics, the Red Wings managed to hit three home runs during the game, courtesy of Wallace, Peguero, and Glasser. However, they were outhit by the Mets, who recorded 12 hits compared to Rochester's eight. Notably, Lorusso and Senger both had standout performances for Syracuse, with Lorusso going 3-for-4 and Senger also finishing 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. The Red Wings struggled at the plate, striking out 13 times throughout the game, which proved to be a significant factor in their defeat.
