Roman Anthony appears to be closing in on the return the Boston Red Sox have been waiting for. Anthony delivered another encouraging performance during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Thursday night. The young outfielder recorded two hits, including an RBI double, in the WooSox’s 7-1 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at Polar Park.
The theme of the night was “Deuces Wild,” and Anthony clearly understood the assignment. He finished 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Anthony singled and scored in the first inning before adding an RBI double during Worcester’s four-run sixth.
With two outs, Anthony lined a pitch into the gap to score Tsung-Che Cheng and extend the WooSox lead. The extra-base hit was his first double of the rehab assignment and provided another positive sign that his timing and power are returning.
Anthony now is hitting .333 with a 1.052 OPS during his time with Worcester.
Roman Anthony Gives Promising Postgame UpdateThe numbers were encouraging, but Anthony’s comments after the game might have been even more important for Red Sox fans.
“I’m getting close to where I want to be,” Anthony told NESN’s Bridgette Proulx during a postgame interview.

— Bridgette Proulx (@bridgetteproulx) August 28, 2026That certainly sounds like a player nearing the end of his rehab assignment, although Anthony stopped short of confirming his immediate plans.
According to Tommy Cassell, Anthony would not commit to traveling to New York on Friday to rejoin the Red Sox. The organization planned to reevaluate him after Thursday night’s game before determining the next step.
That evaluation will carry considerable importance for Boston.

Anthony’s presence would give the Red Sox another impact bat as they continue their push late in the season. Thursday’s performance showed he can make a difference in multiple ways. He reached base, scored a run and drove in another while showing the ability to hit the ball with authority.
The Red Sox do not need to rush one of their most important young players, especially if the club believes he needs another game or two to feel completely comfortable. Anthony’s own assessment, however, suggests the finish line is approaching quickly.
His potential trip to New York remained uncertain when he left Polar Park on Thursday night. His progress did not.
Two hits, one double and one very encouraging quote made it another successful step toward Boston.
