The Boston Red Sox are about to start a very important series against the New York Yankees, and Roman Anthony is a hot topic.
The young superstar has missed most of the season but is currently on a rehab assignment. There is speculation that he could be called up for Friday's series opener against the Yankees in the Bronx.
"I'm not sure yet," Anthony said after Thursday's game in Worcester. "I haven't really talked about it and getting reassessed after the game, so not sure."
Anthony has now played seven minor league rehab games, logging 23 at-bats. Volume is a big part of his rehab, considering he had a wrist injury, and the Red Sox do not want it to pop back up with overuse. He has gone 7-for-23 between games for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He has four extra-base hits, including two home runs.
He went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Thursday. He had a 99.9 mph opposite-field single in the first inning and a 104.8 mph double into right field in the sixth inning. The exit velocities are very encouraging, but the most important thing will be how he feels.
Having him back for a series in which the Red Sox could pass the Yankees in the standings would be a huge development. With Cam Schlittler scheduled to pitch on Friday, the Red Sox could use a bat like Anthony's in the lineup.
