Rory McIlroy suggests whether he’s surprised that Scottie Scheffler has won so much since 2022

Rory McIlroy is the number two ranked golfer in the world behind Scottie Scheffler in first.

The problem for McIlroy is that the difference between him and Scheffler in the world rankings is the same as the gap between the Northern Irishman and 1,176th ranked Thanpisit Omsin.

The 30-year-old American has been the dominant player in the professional game over the past four years.

Scottie Scheffler has 21 PGA Tour wins to his name during that period, including four major championships.

He is still some way behind Rory McIlroy as far as career achievements go, with the 37-year-old having recorded 30 PGA Tour wins, including six majors.

McIlroy recently raved about Scheffler’s consistency, and backed him to win the Player of the Year award.

McIlroy spoke to Sky Sports after shooting a third-round 63 at the Tour Championship on Saturday.

He responded when asked what he has made of Scheffler’s improved putting over the past two seasons.

“I think you’ve got to give Scottie a lot of praise, but you’ve also got to give Phil Kenyon a lot of praise as well,“ McIlroy said.

“You know, Scottie started working with Phil a few years ago, I think just before the Ryder Cup in Rome, in 2023.

“And he’s transformed himself as a putter.

“Like, he’s obviously always been a great ball striker.

“He’s got all the shots, and now to combine that with very solid putting displays, you know, it’s obviously no surprise to see him doing what he’s doing over these last three or four years.“

Robert MacIntyre says Scottie Scheffler is ‘unbelievable’

MacIntyre also spoke highly of Scheffler after his third round at the Tour Championship on Saturday.

“The work rate this guy has, I mean it’s unbelievable,“ the Scot said.

“People think it just comes easy to him, but he puts in the graft. He’s up there with the hardest workers in the world of golf.

“I think a lot of it is a psychological switch. I think he believes he’s a good putter now.“

Being spoken about so highly by his peers proves just how good Scottie Scheffler is.

And there is no sign that his domination will end anytime soon.
