BOYS SOCCER South Webster 3, Northwest 2
In a thrilling boys soccer match that took place at Roy Rogers Field in McDermott, the South Webster Jeeps’ boys soccer program won a 3-2 thriller after holding off a late charge by the Northwest Mohawks’ boys soccer program en route to claiming victory.
South Webster leading point-scorer and goal-scorer Cole Belford led the charge by scoring two goals for the Jeeps. His 36th minute salvo off of a penalty kick following a foul in the box was the lone first half tally for either side, while his 45th minute strike gave Corey Claxon’s group a 2-0 lead.
After building a 3-0 lead through 55 minutes of work, Northwest challenged South Webster as Luke Lewis matched Belford with two goals of his own, striking in the 58th and 78th minutes as a Mohawk comeback fell just short. Connor Ealey assisted on Lewis’ latter finish.
“I thought we did a good job in this game in keeping the pressure more on them, but their key player (Lewis) made this game interesting,” Claxon said. “Our first goal came from a penalty in the box as Cole Belford was dribbling towards the goal. He was fouled and later stepped to the line and netted the penalty kick. It was Cole again later that got on a high ball near the goal and after bringing it down, he put it past their keeper. Our third goal was from a throw from Jaheim that many players challenged for in front of the goal and it went in. At that point we were sitting pretty good, but they were able to get the ball to Luke Lewis a few times and being strong on the dribble, he found his way to the net. Overall, we did a good job of limiting their chances, but there is still some work to do in creating better chances for us near the goal.”
Chase Kingrey made 10 saves for Northwest in goal, while South Webster’s David Rowland added in four stops.
South Webster (2-0, 1-0 SOC II) hosted Minford Tuesday evening in South Webster, while Northwest (0-1, 0-1 SOC II) hosts Valley Wednesday evening in McDermott.
