In a meaningful gesture that honors the legacy of Luke Laufenberg, the UTEP Miners football team has awarded the No. 2 jersey to sophomore receiver Royal Capell. Capell, who transferred to UTEP after playing his freshman year at Oklahoma State, embodies the values that Laufenberg represented during his time with the program.

Luke Laufenberg, a tight end for UTEP in the spring of 2019, tragically lost his battle with leukemia later that year on August 22. Since then, the No. 2 jersey has been designated as an honorary number, given each season to a player who exemplifies the spirit and values that Laufenberg stood for. His father, Babe Laufenberg, is a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and currently serves as a color commentator for the team's radio broadcasts, further adding to the significance of this tribute.

The tradition began in the 2019 season when Justin Garrett, one of the Miners' standout receivers, began wearing the No. 2 jersey with Laufenberg's name on the back. After Garrett completed his eligibility, the jersey was passed to quarterback Gavin Hardison, establishing a precedent that the number would continue to be awarded to an offensive player who demonstrates leadership and commitment to the team.

Capell's selection as the latest recipient of the Laufenberg No. 2 jersey was made by the UTEP coaching staff, highlighting his exemplary qualities since joining the program. UTEP head coach Scotty Walden praised Capell's character, stating, "Since Royal has come into this program, he has been a winner and he’s exemplified Code Blue, being a man of commitment, relentlessness, selflessness, toughness, and integrity. It was unanimous as a coaching staff."

Capell's background as a former player at Oklahoma State, where he demonstrated his skills as a tough and versatile player, has made him a valuable addition to the Miners. Coach Walden noted, "He’s tough, he will block you, he will strike you, he’ll play on special teams, and he’s a heck of a receiver. He’s the total package." This recognition not only honors Laufenberg's memory but also serves as a motivational symbol for Capell and his teammates as they strive for success on the field.

As the UTEP Miners prepare for their upcoming season, Capell's role as the wearer of the Laufenberg No. 2 jersey will undoubtedly inspire both him and his teammates to uphold the values that the number represents. The legacy of Luke Laufenberg continues to resonate within the program, reminding players of the importance of commitment and character in their pursuit of excellence.
