However, a troubling trend from the previous season resurfaced: star wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams experienced difficulties with dropped passes, a recurring issue that has plagued him throughout his career.
Despite being a significant threat to opposing defenses, Coleman-Williams showcased his struggles early in the game. Within the first 16 minutes of play, he recorded two notable drops. The first occurred on a wide-open deep route in the first quarter, while the second was a critical missed opportunity in the red zone on a fourth-and-3 situation that could have resulted in a touchdown. Fortunately for Alabama, East Carolina jumped offsides, which mitigated the impact of the drop.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer recognized Coleman-Williams' potential and made it a priority to retain him when he took over the program two years ago. In an effort to address these issues, Coleman-Williams dedicated his offseason to improving his catching skills, including extra practice with the JUGS machine. Additionally, he opted to play without gloves entering the 2026 season, hoping this change would help him regain confidence in his hands.
While Alabama can afford to overlook a few drops against a team like East Carolina, the stakes will be much higher when they face tougher opponents in the SEC. The Crimson Tide will need Coleman-Williams to perform at his best to compete effectively in the conference and make a serious run for the College Football Playoff.
As of now, Coleman-Williams has accumulated 97 career receptions for 1,554 yards and 12 touchdowns. For Alabama to achieve their championship aspirations, they require the explosive version of Coleman-Williams, rather than the one who has struggled to capitalize on key opportunities.
