Wrexham’s winless start to the season has extended to four games after Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s Red Dragons lost 2-1 at home to Tom Brady’s Birmingham City on Friday.
Having lost their EFL Cup first-round game away to Middlesbrough 1-0 to start their 2026/27 campaign, Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham subsequently drew 1-1 against both Cardiff City and Watford in their opening Championship matchups.
Now, the Premier League hopefuls have stumbled once more, with a brace from Birmingham defender Phil Neumann helping Chris Davies’ side rack up three points for the first time this season, despite Callum Doyle’s 54th-minute equalizer.

This will come as a major blow for Parkinson and Co., especially with the game having marked marquee signing Jacques Ekomié’s debut at left wing-back. Friday also marked Issa Kaboré’s return to the Racecourse Ground, having impressed on loan last season. The Burkina Faso international came off the bench in the 71st minute for his first action since joining the Welsh side on a permanent deal from Manchester City.
Friday’s game also saw the welcome return of Josh Windass, Wrexham’s top scorer last season, following an injury layoff which kept him out of their prior three games. He came off the bench alongside Kaboré, Ryan Longman, and Sam Smith, as Parkinson sought to rescue the game.
Wrexham now languish down in 15th after three league games, having played a game more than all nine sides below them. Next is a tricky game at league leaders Millwall on September 2. The Lions have so far beaten both Bristol City and Norwich City in the league, with both opponents having gone down to 10-men during their defeats. They have also made it through to the third round of the EFL Cup after wins against Queens Park Rangers and Cambridge United.
Meanwhile, Birmingham are now up to fourth for the time being, having drawn their prior two league games against Sheffield United and Bristol City.

On Tuesday, Birmingham were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the second round, brutally losing 6-1 against Premier League side Brentford, having previously beaten Swansea City 1-0. They will return to action on September 1 when they host Southampton, who enter the weekend bottom of the league with one win and a loss to date, as well as an EFL Cup second-round loss to West Ham United.
