The San Francisco 49ers have made a significant addition to their roster by signing edge rusher Khalid Kareem from the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad. This move comes as the team prepares for the upcoming season, particularly in light of injuries affecting their defensive lineup.

Khalid Kareem, who previously played under 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris during his tenure with the Falcons, is expected to join the team in Melbourne, indicating he will be available for the 49ers' Week 1 matchup. The urgency of this signing is underscored by the recent news that fellow edge rusher Sam Okuayinonu has been ruled out due to a foot injury, necessitating immediate reinforcement on the defensive front.

In terms of physical attributes, Kareem stands at 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 268 pounds, making him a comparable replacement for Okuayinonu, who is slightly shorter at 6 feet 1 inch and weighs 269 pounds. Kareem's impressive arm length, which ranks in the 83rd percentile, and hand size in the 95th percentile, suggest he possesses the potential to be a disruptive force against opposing offenses, particularly in run defense.

Despite being drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Kareem has had limited playing time in the NFL. Over the past two seasons, he has logged fewer than 200 snaps on the field. Last season, he participated in four games, with a maximum of 26 snaps in any single game. His performance included four stops and five quarterback pressures, with notable contributions against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17.

The 49ers' decision to bring in Kareem may not be the last move they make ahead of Week 1, especially considering the status of Romello Height, who is dealing with an ankle injury. The injuries to key players are placing additional responsibilities on established stars like Nick Bosa and Keion White, who will need to step up in their absence.

Additionally, the 49ers have recently added Kevin Givens to their practice squad, which could provide further depth on game day. Givens has experience playing on the edge, and his activation could be crucial against the Rams, who often utilize heavy personnel sets. Last season, Givens was occasionally deployed in this role when the team faced similar challenges.

As of now, the 49ers have not announced any corresponding roster moves following the signing of Kareem. Should Okuayinonu's injury prove to be serious, it is possible that he could be placed on Injured Reserve, further impacting the team's defensive strategy as they head into the new season.
