In a thrilling display of high school football, both Satellite and Merritt Island Christian showcased their prowess with commanding victories, continuing their undefeated streaks. Satellite faced its toughest challenge yet in the FHSAA Class 4A matchup against Seabreeze, a game that pitted two unbeaten teams against each other. The Scorpions emerged victorious with a decisive 35-2 win, demonstrating their strong defensive and offensive capabilities.
Head coach Dan Burke expressed his pride in the team's performance, especially given the short preparation time leading up to the game. "Just real proud of them. We prepared a short week and the kids prepared hard. It’s kind of a rivalry and our guys came out and played well in every facet of the game," Burke stated. The Scorpions' defense was particularly impressive, extending their shutout streak to an astonishing 188 minutes and 41 seconds, with the only points scored against them coming from a safety due to a high snap during a punt.
Seabreeze struggled to penetrate Satellite's defense, managing to enter Scorpions territory only three times throughout the game while being forced to punt six times. Burke praised his players' intensity, saying, "They were flying around, making plays. Proud of them. They prepare hard too." The game featured standout defensive plays, including a fumble recovery by defensive lineman Max Lopez after linebacker Anthony Romero delivered a punishing hit on Seabreeze quarterback Noah Bogdanowicz.
Offensively, Satellite took full advantage of their defense's efforts, scoring three touchdowns off turnovers. Quarterback Brody Grennan had a solid performance, throwing for 155 yards and two touchdowns. His connection with wide receiver Noah Corriveau was particularly effective, as the duo combined for both touchdown passes. Grennan highlighted their chemistry, stating, "Me and Noah have been playing together since we were like 10. We communicate so well on the field. Everything is just simple. It’s easy. Just give him the ball and he could score."
The Scorpions opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown run from running back Raiden Kerr and followed with a 1-yard touchdown from linebacker Luke Herte, who had earlier set up the score with a big hit that led to an interception. The offensive line’s performance was crucial, allowing the running game to thrive and tire out the opposing defense.
With this victory, Satellite improved to 4-0 and looks ahead to their next matchup against Pine Ridge on September 11. Grennan noted the team's growing confidence, stating, "After this one, we just shot ourselves up there higher and higher and the momentum is going to be as high as possible."
Meanwhile, Merritt Island Christian also enjoyed a successful outing, defeating the Florida School for the Deaf & Blind with a score of 48-14. This game was a rematch of last year's SSAA 8-man state quarterfinal, and the Cougars bounced back after trailing 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. With this win, Merritt Island Christian improved to 4-0 and will have a bye week before facing Academy at the Lakes on September 18.
