Just before we get things kicked off in Denver this evening, we’ve got the results of our SB Nation Reacts survey for this week, so let’s get them out there before the festivities get started.
This week, we asked you what role you think J.J. McCarthy will have on the quarterback depth chart for this year’s Minnesota Vikings team. The overwhelming majority of you believe that McCarthy will still be a part of the team, but there’s a relatively even split on what, exactly, his role will be.
Of those who responded to our survey, 45% believe that McCarthy will end up being the third-string quarterback for the Vikings this season, while 41% believe that he will serve as the primary backup. That means 86% of you think that he’s at least going to be on the roster, which indicates that there’s some sort of sanity around here. . .at least, I think there is, anyway.
Of the remainder, 12% believe that the Vikings will end up trading McCarthy away, while 2% of our respondents appear to be in the throes of full-blown McCarthy Derangement Syndrome and believe that the Vikings will just outright cut their 2024 first-round pick before his third season starts while getting nothing in return. That would be pants-on-head levels of crazy, but hey. . .I suppose it could happen.
McCarthy is under contract for the 2027 NFL season, whereas Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz are not. If the team is ever going to take any actual, serious interest in attempting to develop him, they’re going to have to get him reps somehow. I don’t know if that’s from running the scout team or running the 2s in practice or what it is. Given that McCarthy, Murray, and Wentz all have fairly prolific injury histories, there’s a decent chance that all three of them see the field at some point this season, too.
It just doesn’t make any sense to me to let McCarthy go, but at this point I honestly have no idea what the thought process is with him where the Vikings’ brass is concerned. I guess we’ll find out sooner rather than later, with the roster deadline coming on Sunday and the season opener coming in just over two weeks.
