The Denver Broncos conducted their second-to-last practice of the week on Wednesday as they gear up for a crucial matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, marking the start of the 2026 NFL season. With the regular season opener just days away, the Broncos are making final adjustments to their roster and practice squad in preparation for the highly anticipated game.

Head coach Sean Payton acknowledged the unique scheduling of this week, with the Broncos having a lengthy 17-day gap between their preseason finale and the regular season opener. "It lays out differently because it’s Monday Night Football," Payton explained. He noted that the typical first week routine would be altered to accommodate the late start, emphasizing the need for adjustments as they prepare for the Chiefs.

As the team wraps up media-attended practices, several key takeaways emerged from Wednesday's session. One of the most significant announcements was the confirmation that Jarrett Stidham will serve as the Broncos' backup quarterback for the upcoming season. This decision comes after Stidham competed with Sam Ehlinger for the position during the summer. Payton stated, "The great thing is we’re able to bring three on game day," before confirming Stidham's role as the primary backup, a position he has held since 2023.

In other news from practice, former Broncos wide receiver Cam Ross, who was not offered a spot on the practice squad, is set to work out with the Kansas City Chiefs. This development follows the Broncos' decision to bring in fellow undrafted free agent Kolbe Katsis for returner depth. The Broncos also added receiver Dane Key, who is the younger brother of safety Devon Key, and veteran Michael Bandy to their practice squad, both of whom may contribute in the return game.

Payton also addressed speculation regarding the potential addition of versatile player Taysom Hill, who has been a free agent. While there had been discussions about Hill joining the Broncos, Payton clarified that there are currently no updates on that front. He mentioned, "I talked to him at the Hall of Fame, but it was really just with a group of people. Nothing new there," indicating that while Hill remains a possibility for the future, no immediate plans are in place.

Defensively, linebacker Que Robinson has stood out during training camp, receiving praise from veteran tight end Evan Engram. Engram highlighted Robinson's impressive development, stating, "He’s been a force all camp... He’s definitely growing as a player, and he has a bright future ahead of him for sure." With Jonathon Cooper on the commissioner’s exempt list, Robinson is expected to see increased playing time alongside starters Nik Bonitto and Jonah Elliss.

As the Broncos prepare to face the Chiefs, Payton expressed confidence in Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is returning from a knee injury. Payton stated, "I’m going to probably say the same for Bo [Nix] — you’ve seen enough things where he’s going to be 100%, and we’re preparing for him at his best." This acknowledgment underscores the importance of being ready for a fully healthy Mahomes, given his track record of excellence.

With the Broncos' practice week concluding, fans can expect an updated depth chart and the announcement of team captains next week. Additionally, official injury reports will begin to roll out, providing further insight as the team heads into the season opener against the Chiefs.
