Umar Nurmagomedov was on the wrong end of arguably the most surprising big-fight result of 2026 when he was knocked out cold by Song Yadong at UFC Fight Night 286.
Although Justin Gaethje's win over Ilia Topuria or Sean Strickland beating Khamzat Chimaev could be deemed more significant, the pure shock factor of seeing Nurmagomedov (20-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) stretched out on the canvas by Song (24-9-1 MMA, 13-4-1 UFC) on Saturday at Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in China ranks near the top of the list.
Never have we witnessed one of the core Nurmagomedov three – Umar, Usman and Khabib – go down in such a manner, and it's all a credit to a beautiful and tactical shot from Song that turned the lights out.
It's a pretty significant setback in Nurmagomedov's title aspirations in the bantamweight division. After falling short of gold against then-champ Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311 in January 2025, Nurmagomedov successfully built himself back up to a serious title contention position. Had he won this, he either would've been fighting for the belt next time he entered the cage, or at absolute worst been one more win away.
Now, though, Nurmagomedov is forced to reset. He's only 30 and is clearly an elite talent, but there's no certainty in what a knockout like this does to his long-term durability and psyche toward fighting. Nurmagomedov has been knocked down in two previous fights before being put out in this one, so that element will definitively factor into the analysis of future fights.
Nurmagomedov told MMA Junkie prior to the fight that he wants to fight before February's Ramadan period. Now, though, that might be a rushed timeline for him. It's possible it runs deeper into 2027, and by then a lot of high-profile stuff will play out at 135 pounds.
We need to find out what unfolds between Petr Yan (20-5 MMA, 12-4 UFC) and Dvalishvili (21-3 MMA, 14-3 UFC) in their UFC 333 trilogy fight for the belt on Oct. 24 in Abu Dhabi, then see who ends up challenging for gold after that.
Somewhere along the line a big name will emerge as a sensible matchup for Nurmagomedov, and he will be under immense pressure to rebound from this, which is a situation he and his team have not truly dealt with before at such a critical career stage.
