The Seattle Kraken have made a significant move to secure the future of one of their most promising young forwards, Jacob Melanson. The 23-year-old winger, who made a notable impact during his debut season, has been signed to a three-year contract extension worth $4.35 million. This deal will keep Melanson with the Kraken through the 2028-29 NHL season, with an annual average value of $1.45 million.

During the previous season, Melanson appeared in 36 games for the Kraken, where he quickly established himself as one of the team's most physical players. His aggressive style of play was evident as he recorded an impressive 188 hits, showcasing the edge and energy he brought to the ice. Seattle's management clearly values this aspect of his game, as they look to build a competitive roster.

In addition to his physical contributions, Melanson also demonstrated his potential as a scorer. He netted two goals and tallied five points during his time in the NHL last season. Furthermore, he played for the AHL's Coachella Valley Firebirds, where he excelled with nine goals and 19 points in just 28 games. While his offensive production may still have room for improvement, the Kraken are confident in Melanson's ability to contribute beyond just scoring.

General Manager Jason Botterill expressed enthusiasm about Melanson's future with the team, stating, "He brought a lot of physicality and energy to our group last season. We’re looking forward to seeing more from him these next few years." This sentiment reflects the organization's belief in Melanson's potential to grow and develop further as a key player in their lineup.

Prior to this extension, Melanson was a restricted free agent coming off his entry-level contract. He was selected by the Kraken in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft, 131st overall. His journey in professional hockey has been marked by rapid development, and the Kraken's commitment to him indicates their investment in his future.

For Melanson, this new contract is not just a professional milestone but also a personal one. He and his fiancé, Belle Ashley, have embraced their life in Seattle, and he expressed his excitement about continuing to play in a city they both love. "I’m feeling awesome," Melanson said. "My fiancé and I are over the moon to have the deal done and be back in Seattle for another three years. She loves it here. I love it. It’s an amazing fan base." This connection to the community may further motivate Melanson as he aims to enhance his performance in the coming seasons.
