The Seattle Sounders FC have officially announced the acquisition of midfielder Caden Clark from D.C. United, a move that highlights the club's commitment to strengthening their roster as they prepare for the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The trade was confirmed on Thursday, with Seattle sending a natural second-round pick in the 2028 MLS SuperDraft and the potential for up to $50,000 in conditional General Allocation Money (GAM) to D.C. United, contingent on Clark remaining on the Sounders' roster through 2027.
Caden Clark, 23, is a U.S. international who will fill a U22 Initiative roster spot for the Sounders. His addition is seen as a valuable investment for the franchise, as he brings a wealth of experience from his time in the league. Seattle's general manager and chief soccer officer, Craig Waibel, expressed enthusiasm about Clark’s capabilities, stating, "Caden is a talented young player who already has significant experience in our league and has shown the ability to impact games in different attacking roles. We believe there is still plenty of room for him to grow, and we’re looking forward to bringing him into our environment and seeing how he can contribute to our group."
This marks Clark's fifth team in MLS, having previously played for Red Bull New York, Minnesota United FC, and CF Montréal. Over his career, he has made 116 regular-season appearances, contributing 11 goals and 19 assists. This season, he has provided one assist in seven substitute appearances for D.C. United, showcasing his potential to impact games despite limited playing time.
Clark's journey in professional soccer began as a homegrown player with Red Bull New York, and in 2021, he was transferred to the German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. Although he did not make a competitive appearance for Leipzig, he gained valuable experience while on loan at Vendsyssel FF in Denmark, further developing his skills abroad.
Internationally, Clark has represented the United States, earning one goal in two caps for the senior national team. He also played a pivotal role in the U.S. U-20 team, helping them secure the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship, which underscores his potential at the international level.
