Shane Van Gisbergen, the accomplished driver known for his versatility across various racing disciplines, is gearing up for a significant milestone in his career. This Friday night, he will make his debut in the CARS Tour at Florence Motor Speedway, stepping into the No. 51 Late Model Stock car backed by Red Bull and Hettinger Racing.
Van Gisbergen, a three-time Supercars champion and a winner in the NASCAR Cup Series, has consistently demonstrated his ability to adapt to different types of race cars. His journey in motorsport has been marked by a willingness to learn and evolve, and the CARS Tour represents another chapter in his ongoing education in American oval racing.
Prior to his foray into NASCAR, Van Gisbergen established himself as a formidable competitor in Australia’s Supercars championship, where he clinched three titles and triumphed in the prestigious Bathurst 1000 three times. His transition to NASCAR began in 2023, where he made headlines by winning his Cup Series debut on the streets of Chicago, a feat not accomplished by any driver in the past 60 years.
While Van Gisbergen has shown proficiency on road courses, his experiences on American ovals have presented a steeper learning curve. He has openly shared his initial challenges, likening his early encounters on ovals to being a “deer in headlights.” However, his progress has been evident, culminating in a top-five finish on an oval at Nashville in 2026 and a fifth-place finish at North Wilkesboro, where he also led 49 laps.

Interestingly, Florence Motor Speedway is not entirely foreign to Van Gisbergen. He attended a CARS Tour event at the 0.4-mile short track two years ago, which left a lasting impression on him. Reflecting on that visit, he noted the absence of walls in Turn 1, describing it as a “pretty eye-opening” experience. This prior exposure has fueled his enthusiasm for the upcoming race, and when the opportunity to compete there arose, he was quick to seize it.
While the CARS Tour debut may not be about proving that a NASCAR Cup winner can dominate Late Model regulars, it is an invaluable opportunity for Van Gisbergen to broaden his racing horizons. Given the trajectory of his NASCAR career thus far, his willingness to embrace new challenges is perhaps the most consistent aspect of his racing persona.
