Mumbai cricket is set for a leadership change as seasoned batter Siddhesh Lad has been appointed the captain for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. This marks the second consecutive year that Mumbai will have a new captain, following Shardul Thakur's tenure during the previous domestic season. The decision was confirmed by Rajesh Pawar, chairman of the Mumbai senior selection committee, who emphasized the need for both leadership continuity and effective workload management.
Pawar stated, "Yes, we’ve decided to appoint Siddhesh as our captain for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. He did well last season and is experienced. Shardul is our match-winner. There is already too much workload on him as he’s expected to bowl a lot of overs, take wickets and contribute with the bat as well. We don’t want to burden him with the responsibility of captaincy. Plus, we’ll have to manage his workload. There are 10 games in the Ranji Trophy and he may have to rest for the odd match." This statement highlights the strategic considerations behind the change in leadership.
Both players were consulted regarding the decision, with Pawar noting that they were positive about the transition. "We’ve spoken to both Siddhesh and Shardul about it, and both are positive about it. Since the season starts with four Ranji Trophy matches in October, we wanted clarity on the captaincy well in advance," he added. This proactive approach aims to ensure a smooth transition as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
Siddhesh Lad's appointment comes after a remarkable domestic season, where he emerged as Mumbai's standout performer in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy. The 34-year-old batter scored an impressive 774 runs in eight matches, averaging 77.40, and secured five centuries, making him the team's leading run-scorer. His consistent performance has earned him this new responsibility, reflecting the selectors' confidence in his leadership abilities.
Throughout his first-class career, Lad has established himself as a reliable batsman, amassing 5,623 runs in 82 matches at an average of 44.27, which includes 15 centuries and 30 fifties. His experience and skill will be vital as Mumbai looks to reclaim glory in the Ranji Trophy.
The 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season will commence with Mumbai facing Chandigarh at Wankhede Stadium from October 11 to 14. Mumbai is placed in Elite Group D, alongside teams such as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Railways, Tamil Nadu, and Uttarakhand.
