KANSAS CITY, Ks. – The Sioux City Explorers (47–48) celebrated their fourth consecutive win, marking a significant achievement for the team this season, as they triumphed over the Kansas City Monarchs (55–40) with an impressive score of 11-2 on Wednesday night.
Manager Steve Montgomery emphasized the importance of focusing on the future, stating, “I’ll enjoy the win until about 10:00 p.m. and then get ready for the next.” This mentality reflects the Explorers' determination to build on their recent success as they navigate the latter part of the season.
The game began with Kansas City taking an early lead in the first inning when Luken Baker hit a home run to center field, putting the Monarchs ahead 1–0. Baker, who had an outstanding August, was recognized as the Rawlings Batter of the Month earlier that day, showcasing his offensive capabilities.
However, Sioux City quickly responded in the second inning. Alberto Osuna launched a two-run homer to center, flipping the score to 2–1 in favor of the Explorers. The momentum continued in the third inning when D’Shawn Knowles added to the lead with a solo home run to left field, extending the score to 3–1.
The Explorers further capitalized on their offensive momentum in the fifth inning. Zac Vooletich scored on a wild pitch, making it 4–1, and shortly after, Wilfredo Gimenez delivered the team’s first grand slam of the season during Game 95, pushing the lead to 8–1.
Kansas City managed to respond with a run in the sixth inning, courtesy of a home run from Grant Richardson, which reduced the deficit to 8–2. However, Sioux City continued to dominate, adding another run in the seventh inning to make it 9–2. Knowles capped off the scoring in the eighth with his second home run of the night, a two-run shot to right field, finalizing the score at 11–2.
On the mound, Hunter Poe showcased his skills, remaining perfect in his professional career with three wins in three starts. He pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs against one of the league's most potent offenses, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure.
This victory not only highlights the Explorers' offensive firepower but also their pitching strength, which will be crucial as they aim to maintain their winning streak and improve their position in the league standings.
