Sophie Williams and Raider Payne Named Happy State Bank High School Athletes of the Week

In a celebration of athletic excellence, Sophie Williams of West Plains has been honored as the Happy State Bank Girls High School Athlete of the Week for the period of August 24-30. Williams, a talented junior volleyball player, showcased her skills in a recent match against Plainview, where she recorded an impressive 19 assists, 14 digs, and two aces, contributing significantly to her team's victory.

Williams garnered a remarkable 2,777 votes out of a total of 5,255 cast, securing 52.9% of the votes. This achievement highlights not only her individual prowess on the court but also the support she has from her peers and community.

On the boys' side, Raider Payne from Amarillo High School has been recognized as the Happy State Bank Boys High School Athlete of the Week for the same time frame. In a thrilling football game against Palo Duro, Payne demonstrated his versatility by rushing for 74 yards on 12 carries, scoring two touchdowns. Additionally, he made a significant impact on defense, recording 10 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and forcing a fumble.

Payne received 2,126 votes, which accounted for 40.5% of the total votes cast. His performance not only helped secure a win for the Sandies but also showcased his dual-threat capability as both a running back and a defensive player.

The voting process for the Athlete of the Week is open to all students participating in varsity sports, with each athlete eligible to be named Athlete of the Week only once per season in their respective sport. Furthermore, athletes from the same school cannot win the award for more than three consecutive weeks, ensuring a fair and competitive selection process.

Nominations for the award are accepted until 5 p.m. each Saturday, with submissions encouraged to include relevant statistics and honors from the week’s games. Voting for the next week’s athletes runs through Thursday, allowing fans and supporters to participate actively in recognizing outstanding performances.

The results of this week’s voting reflect the strong performances of the nominees, with Sophie Williams leading the pack, followed by Raider Payne and Hendrix Funk from Randall football, who received 119 votes. The total votes cast this week reached an impressive 5,255, indicating a high level of engagement from the community.
