COLUMBIA — The South Carolina Gamecocks kicked off their 2026 football season with a resounding 57-0 victory against Kent State on September 5, marking a significant turnaround from their disappointing end to the previous year. Last season, South Carolina struggled offensively, averaging just 336.3 total yards per game, which culminated in a lackluster performance against rivals Clemson. However, the Gamecocks appeared rejuvenated in their season opener, demonstrating a potent offense that left fans optimistic about the upcoming season.
This victory not only set a record for the largest margin of victory in a season opener for the program but also represented a milestone in the coaching tenure of Shane Beamer, who is entering his sixth season. The Gamecocks amassed a staggering 645 total yards, the highest output under Beamer's leadership, showcasing a dramatic improvement in their offensive capabilities.
"What felt different (about the offense)? A lot," Beamer remarked, chuckling at the transformation. "When you have 645 yards of offense and 57 points, that’s fairly new to me. I told (new offensive coordinator) Kendal (Briles) that’s the standard every week and expectation." While Kent State, a member of the Mid-American Conference, may not pose the same challenges as SEC opponents, the Gamecocks' performance was a promising indicator of their potential this season.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who had faced criticism for his performance in the previous season, looked much more at ease in Briles' offensive scheme. After a shaky start that ended in a sack and a punt, Sellers quickly found his rhythm, leading the Gamecocks to touchdowns on eight of their next nine drives. He completed 19 of 23 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, exiting the game early in the third quarter.
By halftime, South Carolina had already surpassed their total yardage from nine games last season, a testament to the effectiveness of their revamped offense. Sellers expressed his excitement, stating, "We came out fast, out eager, excited to play and ready to play. Ready to just prove what we’ve been doing since January." PFF graded Gray's run blocking the highest among the starters, while all four starting linemen achieved grades above 69.1, a significant improvement from last year's struggles.
