BELMONT — Adam Hodge, the head coach of South Point football, acknowledges that his team is still evolving. However, he also recognizes the significant progress made during their latest game on Friday, September 4. The Red Raiders secured a thrilling 19-16 victory against T.C. Roberson, maintaining their perfect record at 3-0 for the third straight season.
South Point entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 16-0 lead, thanks to two touchdown runs from Kaveaun Pless and a 38-yard field goal from Wilson London in the second quarter. The Red Raiders appeared to be in control as they headed into the final stretch of the game.
However, T.C. Roberson showcased resilience, responding with two consecutive touchdown drives. The Rams' quarterback, Karod Harris, initiated the comeback with a 15-yard touchdown run on a critical fourth-and-long situation. This was followed by a 6-yard touchdown run from Harris, and a successful two-point conversion cut South Point's lead to 16-8.
Roberson quickly regained possession after recovering a fumble deep in South Point territory. In a swift offensive move, senior standout Tristan Thompson-Wynn took a pitch and raced 23 yards for another touchdown. With another successful two-point conversion, the Rams leveled the score at 16-16 with just over nine minutes left in the game.
After a punt by South Point and a turnover on downs by Roberson, the Red Raiders regained possession with just over five minutes remaining. Relying heavily on Pless, who carried the ball eight times for 32 yards during the drive, South Point advanced to the Ram 5-yard line. With the clock winding down, London kicked a 22-yard field goal as time expired, sealing the victory for the Red Raiders.
South Point's ability to withstand the late-game pressure and secure the win is indicative of their determination and growth as a team. The Red Raiders were also aided by a crucial facemask penalty on Roberson, which helped move the ball into the red zone with only 90 seconds remaining.
Looking ahead, South Point will conclude its nonconference schedule with a matchup against Mount Pleasant in Week 4, set for kickoff at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, T.C. Roberson, now at 2-1, will travel to Morganton to face Freedom in their next game.
