On a bustling Monday for local high school sports, Southern Lee and Grace Christian made headlines with impressive wins in volleyball and golf. The Southern Lee volleyball team notably swept Overhills, while Grace Christian excelled in their golf match at Quail Ridge.
In tennis, however, the Southern Lee girls faced a tough challenge, falling 8-1 to West Johnston in conference play. The Cavaliers' only victory came from Diana Mariano, who managed to defeat her opponent, Jordan Bass, with a score of 8-5. Other singles matches did not go as well for Southern Lee, as Quillen Petrarca lost a close match to Savannah Hall, finishing 9-7 (7-3), and Julie Slowik fell to Kaitlyn Massengill with a score of 5-1. The team struggled in doubles as well, with Hall and Massengill overcoming Petrarca and Hadasa Cedillo 8-3, and Bass alongside Alexandria Velez Caban defeating Mariano and Hickman 8-2. The Cavaliers now hold a record of 0-3 and are set to host Harnett Central on September 10 at 4 p.m.
In golf, the Southern Lee girls team finished fifth in the Carolina Pines 6A match, posting a team score of 177. Katherine Phillips led the Cavaliers with a score of 52, placing her fifth overall. Carlyvonne Batiste and Kayli Decker followed with scores of 62 and 63, respectively. Southern Lee will return to the course on September 8 at Hyland Golf Course.
The Southern Lee volleyball team, however, found success on the court, defeating Overhills in straight sets with scores of 25-17, 25-13, and 25-21. Jamiya Graham was a standout player, leading the team with 17 kills, an ace, four digs, and an assist. Kaniya Bond contributed with six kills and a dig, while Elizabeth Harrington added five kills, two aces, six digs, and 12 assists. With this victory, Southern Lee improved their record to 9-1 and will face South Johnston in a conference match on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Lee County girls golf team also had a noteworthy performance, finishing second in the Carolina Pines 6A match with a team score of 153, just behind Union Pines, who won with a score of 139. Savannah Phillips led the Yellow Jackets with a score of 48, placing third overall, while Harper McCune and Iyla Tipton finished fifth and eighth with scores of 52 and 53, respectively. Lee County will return to competition at Hyland Golf Club on September 8 at 3 p.m.
Grace Christian also had a successful day, winning their golf match at Quail Ridge with a team score of 153. Jade Andrew was the top performer, finishing first with a score of 45. Rachael Mattingly and Jena Andrew followed closely behind, finishing second and third with scores of 53 and 55, respectively. The Crusaders will return to Quail Ridge on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
In volleyball, Grace Christian improved their record to 10-1 after a three-set victory over Freedom Christian Academy. The Crusaders will host Thales Academy Apex on Thursday at 5 p.m. In contrast, Central Carolina Academy faced a setback, losing 7-0 to North Moore, which dropped their record to 1-4. Despite the loss, goalkeeper Ayden Gaddy made 12 saves, showcasing his defensive skills. The Eagles will look to bounce back when they host Chatham Charter on September 2 at 4:30 p.m. at the Sanford Fairgrounds.
