SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Following a high-scoring game earlier in the week, the Spartanburgers faced off against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws in a much tighter contest on Thursday. The Spartanburgers emerged victorious with a 2-1 win at Fifth Third Park, improving their record to 59-70, while the BlueClaws fell to 46-81.
The standout performer for the Spartanburgers was Jormy Nivar, who made his first home start and delivered an impressive performance, pitching six scoreless innings. Nivar, who threw over 60% of his pitches for strikes, walked only one batter during the game. Notably, he became the first starting pitcher for Hub City to earn a win without recording a strikeout, showcasing his ability to induce weak contact and rely on his defense. He effectively stranded seven runners on base, aided by three double plays initiated by shortstop Evan Morrison.
Offensively, the Spartanburgers wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the first inning, Paxton Kling walked and successfully stole second base against Jersey Shore's pitcher Ryan Dromboski. Antonis Macias then brought Kling home with a timely hit, setting the tone for the game.
The Spartanburgers doubled their lead in the fourth inning. With two outs, Carter Garate managed to reach second base after a hard ground ball slipped past the first baseman's glove. Following that, Cal Stark delivered an opposite-field single that allowed Garate to score, extending the Spartanburgers' lead to 2-0.
As the game progressed, the Spartanburg bullpen took over in the seventh inning. Cole Roland pitched a perfect inning, retiring the BlueClaws in order. In the eighth, Luimy Munoz faced some challenges but managed to navigate through a dropped third strike and a hit batter, leaving two runners stranded. The final inning saw Case Matter come in for the save. Despite allowing two walks, he struck out a batter and made a crucial play to end the game. Jersey Shore's Brady Day hit a hard ground ball to first base, but Macias made a diving stop and threw to Matter covering first to secure the win.
Looking ahead, the Spartanburgers will host the final Fifth Third Firework Friday of the season on Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET. The matchup will feature former Iowa teammates on the mound, with Ben DeTaeye (2-0, 7.77 ERA) facing off against Cade Obermueller (0-2, 8.71 ERA).
