Saturday's preseason finale for the Indianapolis Colts was the final data point for head coach Shane Steichen as he determines who will be the team's backup quarterback.
Anthony Richardson got the start in this contest and played the first quarter. He delivered an efficient performance and helped lead two drives that ended in field goals.
"I thought Anthony got some good drives, for sure," Steichen said afterward, via Locked on Colts. "I think he finished 7-of-10. Made some good throws, did some good things."
When given a clean pocket, Richardson looked comfortable and delivered a few well-placed throws, including one over the middle to Keenan Allen for a 24-yard gain, and another on a layered sideline pass to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.
Leonard, meanwhile, had more of an up-and-down outing. He didn't seem to have the same time in the pocket that Richardson did, and completed just 3-of-7 passes for 48 yards with an interception.
"I think Riley did some good things as well," Steichen added. "Just obviously don't want to turnover there in the red zone. But I thought both of them did some good things."
That said, Leonard did get the Colts offense in the end zone, sparked by a 4th-and-6 conversion when he connected with Anthony Gould on a corner route.
Leonard finished the preseason completing 20-of-42 passes for 199 yards with two interceptions. Richardson was 21-of-33 passing for 250 yards with an interception. He's rushed for 69 yards as well.
Both quarterbacks flashed this summer, but also searched for consistency. For what it's worth, Richardson seemed to have the better overall performance in preseason games.
