BATTLE CREEK — After a prolonged period of disappointment, the Sturgis High School football team finally found success on the field, ringing the victory bell once again. The Trojans defeated Battle Creek Pennfield 27-8 on Thursday evening, marking a significant milestone as they ended a 20-game losing streak that had plagued the team since their last win on October 13, 2023, against Three Rivers.
The Trojans came close to breaking their losing streak in their season opener, narrowly falling to Coldwater 21-20 in overtime. Despite the loss, the team showcased a strong defensive performance, which laid the groundwork for their eventual triumph against Pennfield.
In their latest matchup, Sturgis demonstrated resilience and tenacity, particularly on defense, which held Pennfield scoreless for over three quarters. The game began with a remarkable defensive play by Melachi Warner, who intercepted a pass and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown just before halftime, putting Sturgis on the board first.
Following Warner's interception, the Trojans extended their lead with a 7-yard rushing touchdown from Cristian Alvez, making the score 13-0 after the extra point. This early advantage set the tone for the remainder of the game, allowing Sturgis to play with confidence.
In the third quarter, the Trojans added to their lead with two more touchdowns. The first came from a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Beckett Lamb to Hudson Lamb. Shortly after, Beckett Lamb showcased his dual-threat capability by rushing for a 40-yard touchdown after an interception, pushing the lead to a commanding 27-0.
Alvez led the ground game with 87 rushing yards, while Beckett Lamb contributed 57 yards on the ground. The passing game was efficient as well, with Beckett completing three of five attempts for 49 yards; Hudson Lamb caught two passes for 24 yards, and Darren Speelman added a reception for 25 yards.
Defensively, Beckett Lamb was a standout performer, recording 7.5 tackles, while Hudson Lamb and Liam McKinley each contributed 6.5 tackles. Warner not only made his mark with an interception return for a touchdown but also added five tackles to his performance. The defense collectively intercepted four passes, showcasing their dominance on that side of the ball.
With this victory, the Sturgis Trojans not only ended their long losing streak but also built momentum as they prepare for their next challenge. The team will hit the road again next week to face Edwardsburg, looking to build on their newfound success.
