Sunderland Plot Hijack Move For Lyon Winger Malick Fofana Amid Igor Paixão Saga

Sunderland have been linked with transfer interest in Lyon winger Malick Fofana within the summer transfer window amid the Black Cats' ongoing pursuit of Marseille star Igor Paixão.

Ahead of Sunderland's home clash versus Fulham, reports emerged from Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna on X that Sunderland are weighing up a move for 21-year-old talent Fofana.

Sunderland are said to be exploring the potential move for Belgium international Fofana while discussions with Marseille for Paixão hit stumbling blocks over the financial aspects of the transfer, despite reports from Fabrizio Romano suggesting that the Brazilian has agreed personal terms with the Stadium of Light outfit.

In regard to Fofana, the report outlines that Premier League new boys Hull City have verbally offered £30m for the youngster, with Serie A giants Roma also said to have a contractual agreement in place with the Lyon starlet.

Lyon signed Fofana from Belgian giants KAA Gent for a near £17m fee back in the summer of 2023, and the left-winger has gone on to score 19 goals and notch six assists in 83 outings for the Ligue 1 outfit.

Fofana's return is impressive considering that he is still in the developmental stages of his career, with his technical ceiling and potential seeing the likes of Premier League powerhouses Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal credited with interest in the promising young winger last summer.

Already this season, Fofana has netted twice in five outings for Lyon, with a goal in their 2-0 win over Toulouse in their Ligue 1 opener, and in his side's recent 2-1 Champions League qualification defeat to Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe.

Could Sunderland's Links To Fofana Be A Paixão Tactic?

From a red-and-white perspective, it is clear to see why Sunderland are interested in the Lyon starlet, given how much potential and prowess the pacey winger possesses.

However, the interest in Fofana could potentially be a smokescreen to ramp up the pressure on Marseille to push forward the timeline of the prospective Paixão transfer, given the current wingers that Le Bris' Sunderland squad has to offer.

Sunderland wingers Nilson Angulo and Chemsdine Talbi are of similar profiles to Fofana in terms of being promising young talents, but 26-year-old Paixão would theoretically be a more experienced talent ready to make an immediate impact on the Black Cats' attacking output in wide areas.

Paixão, who netted 12 goals and notched six assists in 42 outings for Marseille last season in his debut campaign for the financially struggling Ligue 1 side, would seemingly be Sunderland's current priority target over Fofana for a recruit out wide.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Sunderland's move for Paixão will materialise, or they will pursue with the reported interest in £30m Fofana and deal an unforseen transfer blow on Hull and Roma.
