Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has voiced his support for Abhishek Sharma to join India’s Test cricket squad while emphasizing Rishabh Pant's continued importance as an X-factor in limited-overs formats. Raina shared these insights during a conversation on Aakash Chopra’s YouTube channel, where he discussed the development of young talent and the significance of nurturing players for Test cricket.
Raina is particularly enthusiastic about Abhishek Sharma, who has made a name for himself as a dynamic performer in white-ball cricket. He believes that Abhishek possesses the skills necessary to transition successfully into the longer format of the game. "I feel Abhishek Sharma should play Test cricket. He is very young, and it’s crucial to consider what he wants and what his coaches think. These are important questions. Are the IPL owners and associations also encouraging players to think about Test cricket? Coaches play a vital role in this process," Raina remarked.
Abhishek Sharma has already established himself in white-ball formats, having previously reached the top of the ICC T20I batting rankings. Although his first-class statistics are still developing, his potential is evident. In his 24 first-class matches, he has accumulated 1,071 runs at an average of 30.60, including one century and five half-centuries. Additionally, he has contributed with the ball, claiming 20 wickets, showcasing his all-round capabilities.
Turning his attention to Rishabh Pant, Raina expressed high regard for the wicketkeeper-batter, who has made significant strides in Test cricket but has not featured in the limited-overs setup since 2024. Pant has scored 3,725 runs in 52 Tests at an impressive average of 43.82, which includes eight centuries and 21 half-centuries. His aggressive batting style and ability to shift the momentum of a match have solidified his status as one of India’s most influential players in the longest format.
Raina praised Pant's hard work and dedication, stating, "He has worked hard. I am very happy with his progress. While many players perform well, he stands out as one of the best. He is my favorite player, and his scoring in Tests is remarkable. He has that X factor, and I believe he will continue to mature in white-ball formats and the IPL as well."
As Pant continues to focus on his Test career, his last T20I appearance for India came against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on July 28, 2024, followed by his most recent ODI match against the same team in Colombo on August 7, 2024. Raina’s endorsement of both Abhishek Sharma and Rishabh Pant highlights the ongoing evolution of Indian cricket and the importance of nurturing talent for future success.
