Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell is facing a challenging road to recovery as he received an update regarding his status ahead of the 2025 NFL season. General manager Nick Caserio provided insights into Dell's condition during a media session on September 1, revealing that while Dell is making progress, he is not yet ready to return to the field.
"I would say he’s close. He’s not quite there, which is why he’s in the category that he’s in. I think we’ll have a better idea here with a lot of these guys after four weeks, or four games, whatever it is," Caserio explained. He noted that Dell is in better spirits compared to his status during training camp, but there is still work to be done before he can rejoin his teammates in competitive play.
Last season, Dell suffered a significant knee injury that has kept him sidelined since. Initially, there was optimism from Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans that Dell could make an appearance in the preseason, but that hope has since been dashed as he will miss at least the first month of the regular season. This setback is a disappointment for both Dell and the Texans, who were looking forward to his contributions on the field.
Caserio emphasized that Dell's recovery is not solely about physical readiness; mental confidence plays a crucial role in his return. "And some of this, too, is, honestly, for him, mentally, just to make sure that he has enough confidence, so he can go out there and perform the way that he’s capable of and the way that kind of he knows he knows how to," he stated. This highlights the importance of mental health and confidence for athletes returning from injury.
The Texans are currently navigating the complexities of the injured reserve process, as Caserio explained the timeline for Dell's potential return. "After four games or four weeks we’ll see where he is. So, the next step is–with those players–is they can start to practice, whenever that is, right? It could be after four weeks; it could be a little bit further out," he detailed. This indicates that while Dell is making strides, his return will depend on a series of evaluations and practices.
As part of the injured reserve rules, Dell has a 21-day window to begin practicing once he is cleared, after which the Texans will have to make a decision on his activation. Caserio noted that more information regarding Dell's status is expected to emerge as October approaches, which will be crucial for the Texans as they assess their roster and prepare for the upcoming games.
In addition to Dell, Texans cornerback Ja'Marcus Ingram is also on the injured reserve list but is expected to return at some point this season. The Texans will need both players to contribute as they aim to improve upon their performance from the previous season.
