Tarik Skubal says his wife made him take his espresso machine from Tigers' clubhouse to Los Angeles

It's confirmed. A beloved espresso machine that used to reside in the Detroit Tigers' clubhouse is gone.

It now sits in Tarik Skubal's kitchen in Los Angeles. Skubal confirmed the news to reporters during his return to Detroit for this weekend's series between his current Dodgers and his former Tigers.

"I'll wear it," Skubal said Saturday of taking the machine, per the Detroit Free Press. "I did buy it, but I guess I'll wear it."

Per the Free Press, Skubal said that that machine is now in his house in Los Angeles. It's not clear what kind of machine it is. But this is certainly not a one-button budget plastic model that you might find in your office break room.

What’s the deal with the espresso machine?

The machine had become a fixture in the Detroit clubhouse. And espresso had become a ritual for the Tigers, so much it that MLB.com published an article on the team’s coffee habit in February during spring training.

Per that story, an espresso setup at the team’s Lakeland, Florida clubhouse even had a name: Casey's Cafe. Skubal and then Tigers pitcher Casey Mize went in together to buy the machine. Like Skubal, Mize was also traded at the August MLB trade deadline, about 120 miles south of Skubal to the San Diego Padres.

That espresso machine, alongside a high-end coffee grinder and scale to find that perfect brew, resided in the locker between Skubal's and Justin Verlander's during spring training. Mize spoke about that setup glowingly while speaking to MLB.com in February.

"Skub has bought us a bunch of new stuff," Mize said of his namesake spring training cafe. "He's got us a better grinder. We have a nice machine up in Detroit, too. It's coming along. We're learning as we go."

Why did Skubal take it?

It’s not clear if the machine in question is the same one that made its debut in spring training. Either way, it’s missed.

"Couldn't believe it," Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson told the Detroit News last week. "That was a really good espresso machine."

So why did Skubal — who’s making $32 million this season, has nearly $82 million in career earnings and will spark a free-agent bidding war for what projects as one of the largest contracts in MLB history in the offseason — feel the need to take his coffee machine from the Detroit clubhouse to Los Angeles?

Per Skubal, his wife, Jessica, made him do it.

“That was my wife,” Skubal said Friday, per The Athletic. “I wanted to leave it and get a new one, but she wouldn’t let me. My wife was like, ‘That was too expensive to just run the charge back.’”
