BLOOMINGTON — The Indiana football team, led by head coach Curt Cignetti, is preparing for a challenging matchup against North Texas, which has recently undergone a significant transformation with over 50 transfers joining the roster. Among these new faces is a familiar one to Indiana fans: Tayven Jackson, who has been named the starting quarterback for the Mean Green.
Jackson, a product of Center Grove High School in Indiana, previously spent two seasons with the Hoosiers, where he made a notable impact during his time. In 2024, he stepped in as a starter when Kurtis Rourke was sidelined due to injury, leading the team to a victory over Washington. Cignetti reflected on Jackson's contributions, noting, "Tayven played really good football for us in '24, came in at halftime in the Nebraska game, and played a great second half, and started next week against Washington, a game that we won."
During his time with Indiana, Jackson showcased his skills, including a solid performance against Washington where he completed 11 of 19 passes for 124 yards, including a touchdown throw to Omar Cooper Jr. that helped establish an early lead. Cignetti praised Jackson's abilities, stating, "He's very talented. He's got a live arm, he can run, he's a good athlete. Started a number of games last season, so he's a good player."
As Jackson embarks on the 2026 season with North Texas, he faces the challenge of filling the shoes of Drew Mestemaker, who had an outstanding season as the American Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Mestemaker set impressive records, including 4,379 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 168.7. Following his successful freshman year, Mestemaker transferred to Oklahoma State, leaving Jackson with the task of leading the Mean Green's offense.
North Texas's new head coach, Neal Bown, opted for Jackson's experience as he takes the helm of the team. Jackson brings with him a wealth of experience, having played in 27 career games and starting 16 of those. Last season, he had a 4-6 record as a starter for UCF, throwing for 2,151 yards and 10 touchdowns. Bown has expressed confidence in Jackson's abilities, stating, "He has a presence to him. The thing too is he’s been through some adversity at Indiana and UCF. What that does is it gives you some resiliency. He’s felt disappointment before, and he’s worked extremely hard since he’s been here not to repeat that feeling. He’s also super talented."
As the Hoosiers prepare for this matchup, they will need to focus on containing Jackson, who is eager to prove himself against his former team. The game promises to be a compelling encounter, with both teams looking to establish their identities early in the season. Indiana will aim to leverage their familiarity with Jackson's playing style, while North Texas will look to capitalize on his experience and talent to secure a victory.
