The U.S. women’s national basketball team has a rich history of success, and their latest performance at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup continues that tradition. In their opening match against China, Team USA demonstrated the effectiveness of their youth movement, securing a decisive 94-61 victory in Germany.

Head coach Kara Lawson, making her debut in a national tournament, opted to start five veterans, including Breanna Stewart, who is participating in her record-tying fourth World Cup. However, it was the younger players who ultimately led the charge, particularly the dynamic backcourt duo of Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers. Both players showcased their skills, indicating that they are well-equipped to carry on the legacy of excellence established by their predecessors.

This tournament marks Team USA's pursuit of a fifth consecutive World Cup title, while the WNBA is on a break for the international competition. The match against China was anticipated as a significant challenge within Group D, and the U.S. rose to the occasion, demonstrating strong ball movement and teamwork throughout the game.

In the early stages, the veteran starters quickly established a lead, going up 10-4. However, as the game progressed, Lawson began to integrate her younger players, with Clark and Aliyah Boston entering the game midway through the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Team USA had built a comfortable 27-12 lead, thanks to the contributions from both veterans and newcomers.

As the game unfolded, the younger players took center stage. The U.S. outscored China 41-26 in the latter part of the game, with every player logging significant minutes and contributing to the score. Rhyne Howard emerged as a key player, hitting four three-pointers and finishing with 14 points, tying for the team lead alongside Clark and Bueckers.

Lawson utilized the group stage to experiment with different lineups, allowing her younger players to gain valuable experience against top competition. The chemistry among the team, particularly between Clark and Boston, who previously played together in the WNBA, was evident in their seamless transitions and effective scoring runs.

The future looks bright for Team USA, especially with the promising partnership of Clark and Bueckers. Both players have previously won gold medals at youth levels and are expected to be integral parts of the team leading into the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Their ability to complement each other’s strengths—Clark as a facilitator and Bueckers as a mid-range scorer—was on full display during the match.

Clark's performance was particularly notable, as she set a record for the most assists without a turnover in a World Cup game for Team USA, finishing with 11 assists, 14 points, and a plus-30 rating. This achievement underscores her potential to break additional records as the tournament progresses.

On the other side of the court, China’s Zhang Ziyu, a towering 7-foot-3 center, presented a unique challenge for Team USA. Despite her height advantage, the U.S. managed to contain her scoring, with Zhang finishing with 13 points and demonstrating the potential to develop further as she prepares for the upcoming WNBA draft.

Looking ahead, Team USA will continue their World Cup journey with matches against Italy and Czechia, where the younger players are expected to receive ample playing time. As the team navigates through the group stage, the blend of experience and youthful energy will be crucial in their quest for another championship title.
