The Tennessee Titans are actively seeking to bolster their secondary, an area identified as a significant need for the team this season. With projected starters including Cor'Dale Flott, Amani Hooker, Kevin Winston Sr., Alontae Taylor, and Marcus Harris, the depth behind these players raises concerns, particularly with Kendell Brooks and Joshua Williams starting the year on injured reserve.
In an effort to address these issues, the Titans attempted to claim cornerback Darrell Luter off waivers on Monday. However, the Las Vegas Raiders, who held the top position on the waiver wire, successfully claimed Luter before Tennessee could secure him.
The Raiders had the advantage of being able to select from a pool of players, and they chose Luter, a former cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers. His availability attracted interest from several teams, including the Titans, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, and Indianapolis Colts, all of whom submitted waiver claims for the player. Ultimately, the Raiders' priority allowed them to claim Luter, who had the most interest of any player waived that weekend.
Luter was selected by the 49ers in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Throughout his three seasons in the league, he has faced challenges with injuries, limiting him to just 27 games. In the 2025 season, he managed to record 28 tackles, including 17 solo tackles, along with one fumble recovery, one pass defensed, and 1.5 stuffs. His performance, although hindered by injuries, showcased potential that teams were eager to tap into.
Had the Raiders not claimed Luter, it is likely he would have joined the Titans, reuniting him with his former defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh. This connection could have provided the Titans with much-needed depth and versatility in their secondary, especially as they navigate the early part of the season with limited options due to injuries.
Unfortunately for the Titans, Luter will now be wearing the Raiders' black and silver this fall, leaving Tennessee to continue exploring other avenues to enhance their secondary as the season progresses. The Titans' efforts to strengthen their roster reflect their commitment to improving their defensive capabilities, especially as they prepare for a competitive season ahead.
