Texas A&M Aggies Fans Ranked Most Obnoxious in Texas

As college football season ramps up, the fervor of fanbases is once again on display, and a recent survey has revealed that the Texas A&M Aggies fans are considered the most obnoxious in Texas. This title, which no fanbase would typically aspire to claim, comes from a statewide poll conducted by Overton Insights.

The survey, part of a broader examination sponsored by the Texas Public Policy Foundation, sought to gauge the perceptions of college football fandom across political lines. The results highlighted a notable rivalry between the Aggies and the Texas Longhorns, two schools with a storied history of competition.

In the findings, 29.7% of Texas voters labeled Aggies fans as the most obnoxious, narrowly edging out Longhorn fans, who garnered 27.4% of the votes. This close margin underscores the intense rivalry that exists between these two schools, particularly as they prepare for their annual matchups.

Interestingly, the survey also revealed a partisan divide in opinions about which fanbase is more obnoxious. Among Republican voters, 31.9% identified Longhorn fans as the more obnoxious group, while only 24.1% chose Texas A&M. Conversely, Democratic voters favored the Aggies, with 37% considering them more obnoxious compared to just 20.9% for the Longhorns.

Mark Cunningham, Poll Director at Overton Insights, commented on the results, noting the surprising nature of the findings. "It is interesting that Texas and A&M are far ‘above’ their statewide competitors when it comes to most obnoxious fan base," he stated. He pointed out that despite the immense size and wealth of SEC schools like Texas A&M and Texas, their fanbases are perceived as more obnoxious than that of Texas Tech, the reigning Big 12 champion.

The survey also included other Texas universities, with the University of Houston ranking third at 11.2%, followed by Texas Tech at 10.3%. Despite their tortilla-throwing tradition, Texas Tech fans were still viewed as less obnoxious than their Aggie and Longhorn counterparts. Baylor, SMU, and TCU rounded out the list with 9.6%, 6.7%, and 5.1% respectively.

Cunningham suggested that these perceptions might shift in the future, particularly as younger voters become more active in polls. He noted that among voters aged 18-29, Texas Tech was viewed as the most obnoxious fan base at 24.1%, slightly ahead of A&M at 20.4% and Texas at 18.2%. TCU fans also received a notable mention with 17.3% in this demographic.

This survey not only highlights the intense rivalries within Texas college football but also reflects how fan perceptions can vary significantly across different age groups and political affiliations. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if these rankings hold or if the dynamics of college football fandom in Texas evolve further.
