AUSTIN - The Texas Longhorns officially opened their new Frank and Wofford Denius Football Training Complex on Friday, marking a significant investment in the future of their football program. Located just a short distance from Royal-Memorial Stadium, this state-of-the-art facility is estimated to have cost over $80 million, according to sources within the university.
The impressive 79,000-square-foot complex boasts a full 100-yard Field Turf football field, alongside an outdoor grass field that may hint at a potential shift to a grass playing surface for the stadium in the coming years. Additionally, the facility features a four-story underground parking garage that can accommodate 450 vehicles, ensuring ample space for all Longhorn athletes. The Itkin Silver Spurs reception area is also included, designed to host various events.
The grand opening ceremony attracted over 100 Longhorn fans, including notable former players such as quarterback Donnie Wigginton, running back Billy Dale, and defensive tackle Stevie Lee. The football team has already begun utilizing the indoor complex for practice sessions, having started training there earlier in the week. They are set to kick off their season with a home game against Texas State on Saturday.
During the ceremony, Arch Manning, the highly touted quarterback, described the new facility as "very plush" and "incredible." Wofford Denius, the son of the legendary Longhorn benefactor Frank Denius, shared heartfelt remarks about his upbringing as a Texas fan, adding a personal touch to the event.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian reflected on his initial season with the Longhorns in 2021, recalling a moment when board of regents chairman Kevin Eltife first visited the previous practice facility. Sarkisian humorously recounted Eltife's reaction to the old indoor setup, which he described as "ugly." This moment sparked a commitment to enhancing the program's infrastructure, leading to the development of the new training complex.
"We have lofty dreams," athletic director Chris Del Conte stated during the opening, emphasizing the program's aspirations for future success. Eltife concluded his remarks with an inspiring call to action, stating, "Now let’s go win a natty," referencing the ultimate goal of securing a national championship.
