Tiger Woods, the 15-time major champion, has been sentenced to a five-year driving ban and fined after reaching a plea agreement in connection with a reckless driving charge following a car crash in Florida earlier this year. The incident occurred in March when Woods' Land Rover collided with a pick-up truck towing a trailer, resulting in his vehicle rolling over.
The incident led to Woods' arrest, during which he spent eight hours in jail before being released on bail. Initially, he had pleaded not guilty to charges that included driving under the influence (DUI), property damage, and refusal to submit to testing. However, during a court appearance at the Martin County Courthouse, Woods opted to accept a lesser charge of reckless driving.
Judge Darren Steele, presiding over the case, imposed a five-year suspension of Woods' driving license and a $1,000 fine. Additionally, Woods received a careless driving citation, which also carries a five-year suspension, but the judge allowed both suspensions to run concurrently.
Fortunately, Woods emerged from the crash without physical injuries, exiting the vehicle through the passenger door. While he passed a breathalyzer test for alcohol, he declined to take a urinary test for drugs, which resulted in an additional $500 fine. According to the police report, officers noted that Woods appeared to be sweating profusely and exhibited lethargic behavior, with bloodshot and glassy eyes.
Woods later admitted to looking down at his cell phone and adjusting the radio shortly before the accident, failing to notice that the vehicle in front of him had slowed down. He claimed he had not consumed alcohol but acknowledged taking several prescription medications earlier that morning, insisting he had not used any illegal substances.
During the sobriety tests conducted by law enforcement, Woods struggled to follow instructions, prompting a deputy to express concern that Woods' normal faculties were impaired, rendering him unable to operate his vehicle safely. This incident marks a troubling chapter for Woods, who has faced significant challenges in recent years, including a serious car accident in California in February 2021 that resulted in multiple leg injuries and emergency surgery.
Since that accident, Woods has not participated in any PGA Tour events, having last competed in July 2024. He has undergone numerous surgeries, totaling 20 on his leg and seven on his back, as a result of the 2021 crash. Following the recent incident, Woods took to social media platform X to express his understanding of the seriousness of his situation, stating, "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery." This is not the first time Woods has faced legal issues related to driving; he was arrested in 2017 for DUI after being found asleep at the wheel and later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
