Top five Texans players fans should draft on your fantasy team

With the preseason about to come to an end, it is time to start planning who to draft on your fantasy football team this season.

While the Houston Texans were known for their defense last season, they still have multiple players that you should consider drafting this season, including running backs David Montgomery, receivers Nico Collins and Kayshon Boutte, tight end Dalton Schultz and quarterback C.J. Stroud.

RB David Montgomery

Montgomery is my top pick for players to draft from the Houston Texans. Running backs have a higher value in fantasy than wide receivers because there are only so many good backs that are worthy of starting in fantasy. Unlike many of the running backs across the NFL, there is not a concern that Montgomery is going to share the backfield.  Houston brought him in to be the bellcow of the offense instead of being a secondary back like he was with the Detroit Lions.

Montgomery generally seems to be underrated as a fantasy prospect, but that is not a mistake to make this year. The offensive line may be bad, but he will still find a way to put up a lot of fantasy points each week.

WR Nico Collins

Houston’s trade for Kayshon Boutte does not impact Collins’ standing with the team. In fact, the trade actually helps him. Jayden Higgins’ injury left a hole in the receiver room that would have hurt Collins’ fantasy production if it was not addressed because it would be much easier for opposing defenses to double-team him. Boutte restored balance, allowing Collins to return to his normal WR1 production.

He has over 1,000 receiving yards and at least six touchdowns each of the past three seasons. No reason that should change this season.

TE Dalton Schultz

Tight ends can be difficult to come by. However, Dalton Schultz has a lot of upside given he is coming off a season with 82 receptions and 777 receiving yards. While he only had three touchdowns, his target volume makes him one of the better tight end prospects in fantasy.

If you do not want to pay the high price for one of the elite tight ends like Colston Loveland with the Chicago Bears or Trey McBride with the Arizona Cardinals, Schultz is a good option that you can get in a later round and still have solid production at the tight end spot.

WR Kayshon Boutte

When Boutte was traded to the Texans’ he became the No. 2 receiver on the roster. Targets will be a little hard to come by. Houston will rely on the run game far more this year as opposed to last season with Montgomery at the helm. He will also be competing with Collins and Schultz for targets and both had over 100 targets last season.

If you are looking for a receiver in the later rounds of the draft with a high ceiling, Boutte is a good target, especially given his history as a big-play type of receiver.

QB C.J. Stroud

Based on his performance last season, C.J. Stroud is not a starting quarterback in fantasy. However, it is smart to have a backup quarterback in case of an injury to your starter. Stroud is not a bad backup option if you had to start him for a few weeks. He is someone that could be drafted near the end of your fantasy draft, especially in smaller leagues, and provides an extra security blanket at the most important position on your fantasy roster.
