Toronto FC has officially announced the acquisition of winger Lewis Morgan from San Diego FC in a trade deal confirmed on Wednesday. In this transaction, San Diego FC will receive an international roster slot for the year 2026, enhancing their future roster flexibility.
Lewis Morgan, a 29-year-old Scotland international, is entering his seventh season in Major League Soccer (MLS). He has previously played for Inter Miami CF from 2020 to 2021 and for Red Bull New York from 2022 to 2025. Over the course of his MLS career, Morgan has made a significant impact, scoring 34 goals and providing 25 assists in 139 league appearances.
Before joining the MLS, Morgan had a successful career in Scotland, playing for clubs like St. Mirren and Celtic, as well as a stint with Sunderland in England. His performance in the league was recognized when he was named the 2024 MLS Comeback Player of the Year while with Red Bull New York, highlighting his ability to bounce back and perform at a high level.
Toronto FC's general manager, Jason Hernandez, expressed enthusiasm about the new addition, stating, "We are happy to add Lewis at this time. He has established himself as an impactful attacker in the Eastern Conference over the past several seasons. His flexibility to play across multiple positions in the attack will be a valuable quality for our group moving forward." On the international stage, Morgan has earned seven caps for the Scotland national team, including participation in the 2024 European Championship, showcasing his talent on a larger platform.
With this acquisition, Morgan becomes Toronto FC's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of German midfielder Niklas Dorsch and homegrown defender Richard Chukwu. Currently, Toronto FC sits in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, tied with Orlando City at 25 points for the final Wild Card position. Meanwhile, San Diego FC is positioned eighth in the Western Conference with 30 points, indicating a competitive landscape in both conferences as the season progresses.
