COLD SPRING, MN — In a surprising turn of events, Totino-Grace managed to upset No. 13 Rocori with a decisive 20-8 victory, highlighted by a dominant third quarter performance. Coming out of halftime, the Eagles held a six-point lead and were poised to extend their advantage with possession of the ball. Throughout the first half, Totino-Grace demonstrated their strength on the ground, effectively challenging Rocori's defense with contributions from both sophomore Fua Taumalolo and senior Ben Bergan.
The pivotal moment of the game occurred during the third quarter when Totino-Grace executed an eight-minute, 41-yard drive that ultimately left Rocori reeling. The Eagles maintained possession for 11 of the 12 minutes in that quarter, culminating in Taumalolo's touchdown that gave them a significant edge. This strategic play not only showcased their offensive prowess but also highlighted their ability to control the game clock.
Rocori's first-year head coach, Alex Larson, expressed frustration with his team's inability to capitalize on opportunities, stating, “We have got to execute. We’re putting our guys in position; I think we just got to do a better job of when we get that opportunity to execute on it.” Despite their efforts, the Spartans struggled to regain momentum after the Eagles' lengthy drive.

Taumalolo further elaborated on their game plan, emphasizing the importance of winning the line of scrimmage to enhance their run game. “All practice; we were trying to really aim to win the line of scrimmage to get our run game going so we can pop it out for the slips, outs and even our deep comebacks,” he noted. His touchdown reception from a play-action pass in the second quarter exemplified the effectiveness of their strategy.
However, the night was not without its challenges for Rocori. As the game unfolded, injuries began to plague the Spartans. Sophomore quarterback Tyson Zauhar suffered a cramp in the fourth quarter, while senior linebacker Renner Haven sprained his ankle during the final drive. Larson lamented the loss, stating, “Losing week one sucks. We felt like there’s just some plays here and there, like we [would] execute and [then] turn the ball over. Those were big momentum swingers.” He acknowledged the need for his team to protect the football and learn from their mistakes moving forward.
