ONTARIO — Ontario senior Tre Fowler took the opening kickoff to the house, caught a 23-yard touchdown pass and intercepted a pass for an all-around performance to remember.
That was all just in the first quarter alone.
A true do-it-all performance for the speedster helped Ontario steamroll the Norwalk Truckers 58-0 to move to 2-0 on the season.
“Tre is doing a great job on both sides of the ball for us right now,” said Ontario head coach Aaron Eckert. “The dude is electric. Every time he gets the ball in his hands, it’s a good thing for the Warriors.”
“I have a big role. Wherever I’m at, I have to do my job every time I’m on the field. It feels great to win, we just have to keep getting better week by week,” added Fowler.
After the opening kickoff return, a forced fumble on the first play of scrimmage helped propel Ontario to a 14-0 lead just 50 seconds into the game. The Warriors led 23-0 with 8:34 remaining in the first quarter. It was a balanced attack between passing and rushing. They got the lead up to 51-0 at half and mostly played the backups with a running clock the rest of the game.
“I thought we had a great start to the game. When we return a kick for the second week in a row for a touchdown, that starts things off, and the ball got rolling for us in a good way," said Eckert. "Whenever you’re able to put a team away early, it’s a great feeling, and you’re able to get a lot of guys into the game."
Norwalk was never able to gain momentum after the opening kickoff. The Truckers did not complete a pass on the night. Freshman Brysen Risner did have 15 carries for 60 yards. Sophomore Lyric Shipp had 17 carries for 50 yards, and also recovered a fumble.
The home stands had much more to cheer about. Sean Tanner threw three touchdown passes, while Max Ciroli ran in two scores. Gavin Miller and Mark Porter each had one rushing touchdown. Trindon Flenoury, Cardae Brown, and Fowler were the recipients of Tanner's three touchdown passes.
The defense was firing on all cylinders, too. Besides Fowler’s pick, the Warriors forced a safety, and Trey Remy and Matt Jenkins each recovered fumbles.
Tanner looked much more comfortable running the Ontario offense this week. He completed 7 of his 11 pass attempts for 127 yards and the three scores.
“Sean is a kid that has played a lot of football. Tonight is what we were seeing all preseason. It was one of those team things where he just got comfortable,” Eckert said.
Defense may be the key to watch moving forward. The Warriors have given up just seven points on the season through these first two games of the season.
Ontario improves to 2-0, with high hopes moving forward. The Warriors travel to Tiffin Columbian in Week 3 for their first road game. Norwalk falls to 0-2 after falling to Toledo Start last week and travels to Madison in Week 3.
